You know sometimes I feel if my brother would face the facts and apologize for some of his ways and actions towards his family (his sisters) - maybe his life would be a little better. Without all the conflicts and emotional heartaches he challenges from day to day. I love this man with all my heart and yet he denies me even as a sister! Well, I remember most of the poems I wrote when I had to be Moms' care giver and he never helped and I am now bitter as I was then. He pretended all was well the day we buried Mama and stabbed me in the heart again for the last time! It will take a lot for me to try and forgive, but I can't promise anything - I may get Alzheimer's and forget - yet my feelings are written and saved. God bless anyone who has a family member that can actually ride all around you, walk right next time to you and not even acknowledge you...God forbid this happens to you!!!!

A Housecoat for Mom!

As we celebrated Mom on Mothers` Day
A gift from her son in a fashioned way
Mom’s not able to open presents now
It`s sad to know she doesn`t know how
If she really knew who her present was from
She`d say, "oh, it`s a housecoat for Mom!"
If you`d only come to see her now and then
You would know the kind of gifts to send
Mom doesn`t wear housecoats anymore
She needs something warm as she paces the floor

Today here in North Carolina after threats of snow all night, we woke up to a little over an inch. Enough to close the schools leaving my granddaughter here today to be entertained.

We pulled out a few magazines and cutter and glue and along with toothpicks and our imaginations we made paper beads. She was so into this project we made about 20 of these little items and of course I am in anticipation of watching the swearing in of Obama, I left her there to make her own. Really she did good and took everything home with her to make more. Shamefully I didn't get a picture today but I will make one of her finished project; a necklace for her mom. Be watching for them!

These photos were made Monday, October 6th, the day Kiara got her cast wet taking a bath. Out of concern for problems I took Kiara to Durham to the doctor so it could be checked. Much to my surprise the break had healed and the cast taken off - Yeah, much freedom to Kiara and look where we ended up after picking up Katie after school!

A NEW CAST -

JUST IN TIME FOR

HALLOWEEN !

My little granddaughter, Kiara, that little monkey I wrote about earlier who had broken her arm playing on the monkey bars at after-school care. This being her second day of kindergarten successfully had broken her little wrist, having to have surgery to reset it. She made it without incident for 3 weeks of anything happening to the pink cast she was wearing -

Today, September 18th - we made a trip to Durham where her Mommy works and got a new cast, xrays and award! Everything is healing well except for a little swelling and a bruise - she is doing great! All in one setting!

I want to personally "Thank" all who participated in the care for my "Lil' BooBoo" - and a big "Thanks" to Julia's bestfriend, Jennifer Bryd, without her holding Kiara and Mawmaw crying we would probably still be there -hehehe!

An Eagle???

Last night my son and daughter-in-law

called at 11:00 pm to tell me they thought an

eagle was sitting on the bench in their nature garden.

A taking pictures, they went inside to bed.

This morning (9/8/08) at 7:30 am

Lori called and said the bird was still on the bench!

Getting my granddaughter off to school and grabbing

my camera, I hurried off to their house a few blocks away

to see this incredible site. He was beautiful! Never moved,

watched us and never made a sound. I was

absolutely in love with this beautiful bird! I didn't know

kind of bird it was! He looked like an eagle to me!

After awhile, the wildlife man came, checked him out

and let us know it was a "Red Tail Hawk" - and actually

the biggest he had seen in at least three years.

He assured us this bird would be well taken care of.

It is a state bird and a $10,000.00 fine if killed.

This bird is in good hands - will have his wing fixed -

get some rehabilitation and let out in the wild again.

We were assured we were allowed to call and check on him.

He watched as we walked about

As if listening to our every word

Wildlife guy came by to see

His curosity was fast and quick

We did find out it wasn't a eagle

With a broken wing, not sick.

A Red Tail Hawk how sad, but true

With mischief on his brain

To us he was so pretty

And driving us all insane!

Little rabbit in the cage

Is what his heart desired

Yet he couldn't get inside

Kept neat and safely wired.

Now on the ground he's hopping

Getting out of the sun and heat

While animal control comes get him

He'll be fixed and so complete.

Happy 1st Birthday, Kenzie! (9/1/08)

This is Kenzie Renee Hunter & her mom, Amber -

my oldest granddaughter and my only great-grandchild.

She is a blessing to us all - smart, sweet and

has now started walking. Should I worry? Am

wondering will I make it a full day of running after her?

This child is in full force and I am loving it! She isn't half as bad

as I thought. I have a gate up at the kitchen and did my chores

as she played with her toys and never once messed with anything!

Oh such a beauty! This is one good child!

Amber is so very lucky to have such a good child -

Parents were called - to the doctor they go

She couldn't even make a fist.

She has broken accidentally -

She'll wear for the next few weeks

Searching For 2 Sisters: Hurricane Katrina

We thought the worse when Katrina hit the Gulf coast, each and everyday we worried and prayed about our two sisters so far away. Staying glued to the television - switching from channel to channel - just trying to find out something! The weather channel announced a dreadful day for the Gulf coast and surrounding areas on August 29, 2005. It was on a Monday and I decided to search for our two sisters in New Orleans, Louisiana on the computer. It had been 24 years since we heard from Tammy Jo and Candy, our half-sisters. They lived in Westwego, Louisiana the last we heard after our dad passed away September 23, 1980. Candy and her husband, Raymond came here to be with us when Daddy died and went to Daddy’s wake at the funeral home. The day of Daddy’s funeral and burial she didn’t show up as we waited for her, we never heard from her again. As we proceeded with the terrible ordeal of laying Daddy’s body to rest in the back of our minds we wondered just what happened to Candy. We never knew why, she never let us know she was leaving. We wondered all through the years what happened and why she left before his funeral. At times throughout the years we always wondered if we said or done something to offend Candy or Raymond, yet we didn’t think we had. She simply left and never came back. Tammy Jo had to stay behind because her baby was soon to be born and she couldn’t travel from Louisiana to North Carolina as the doctors advised. This would be the last time of communication we had with either one of our sisters until now.
As my search continued day after day I am compelled to find them, to know if they are okay even if they didn’t want to see us, we just wanted to know their if they were okay and their whereabouts and that they both were safe. As we sit and watched, listening to the reports of what Hurricane Katrina was doing. There was more damage than anyone suspected and it was so traumatic as the people of the Gulf Coast scrambled to get away for safety sake. These people went through such devastation as this powerful storm just ripped their lives apart and all they worked so hard for away. Where in the world were our sisters, we wondered and worried so, are they safe? Two days have now passed as I search and search, filling out questionnaires of names and birth dates as we remembered so long ago. We knew our dad’s information, yet not theirs, not as much as we should have known. We knew their moms name, but that was it, not her birth date or anything to help us find them. “Oh God, please help us find them, let us know they are okay, we know you will do your part to keep them safe, it is your will and divine grace that we ask for some kind of way to know they are alright. Please show us a sign or something to help us, I pray to you. Amen”.
You see it wasn’t our fault or theirs about being separated or why we had to live so far apart and not know each other. Our parents are the ones who made all things possible with the happenings of separations. Daddy was a rambler as I understood while growing up and later he didn’t deny anything. We didn’t really know the man; he just wondered in from time to time and didn’t tarry long. We did know of his other family; we were curious and asked questions about the two girls, we were his kids too! There were a lot of times he would come to town visiting his two brothers with his daughters and not even see us, we never knew until later after he had left and gone back to Louisiana.

In 1972, already 27 years old with two little boys, Daddy came to my oldest sister, Judy’s and wanted to see us all. We were told to come to Judy’s, noone asked why, just come. As I walked in the door everybody said to go in the bedroom, once inside the door closes a little and there he stood. The tallest best-looking Daddy in the world, I literally passed out from excitement! Standing there beside him were two girls, his daughters, our sisters. Tammy Jo and Candy Allison. Tammy Jo looked so much like Judy and Candy looked like some of our cousins – they were definitely Daddy’s girls. Oh gosh, here is the moment I had waited all my life. To get to see my daddy, just to show him I’m fine and my two little boys. Just for him to know I had forgiven him yet I will never forget what he did to us. We just never understood why he walked away from five kids to go and raise another family. Now that I am grown I understand we were certainly not the only ones who endured such a situation as this to be raised by our mother alone and with no help from Daddy. Jealousy was in our minds growing up as we heard from family members about Daddy having two daughters he was raising and it was heartbreaking. I often dreamed of spending time with him in my younger days and just wondered what it would be like. Yet our mother was so strong and took care of us, showing us the love a Mother should. She worked hard all our lives to give us things we needed we never did without. There were disappointing times such as Christmas and we really didn’t get things we asked for but she made it up to us. Our mother never, ever complained nor did she ever put our daddy down, we did know he was a truck driver for Associated Transport Trucking Company in Burlington, NC in our younger days. So by that we knew he was always on the road. As far as we knew he and Mama always remained friends somewhat throughout the years and in fact never divorced. Mama and Daddy married October 10, 1942 and separated in 1951 after our younger sister Vickie was six month old. Back then as children of a broken home it was sad, we didn’t understand, our grandpa Coleman was the only male role model in our family and we lost him when we were young in October 1959 yet again we are stripped of the only Daddy we ever known. It hurt so to be without a Dad, so many of our friends had their dads and sometimes we wished our dad was there, but we overcome tragedies, this wasn’t and will never be the only hurt in our lives as we grew into maturity. Mama did her best and with that we were thankful, she was a loving lady with a heart of gold and I would never trade the memories for anything. She loved us and we all knew it, she always let us know one way or another.
A typical Saturday morning with a few cups of coffee to wake me up it’s off to the computer. Checking my email and web pages for visitors is my usual ritual everyday and occasionally a chat or two with family members or friends. Yet this morning was so different when I signed on and the computer says “You’ve Got Mail”. There before my eyes was an unusual looking subject line in my email – NOLA RESPONSE. Oh my word, I was panicking, what is this? I remembered seeing these initials for days and days while online and yet I could not pinpoint it now. My heart was beating so as if it were in my lap! Oh, is this what I had been longing for? Are they okay? Was this going to be good or bad? I was so full of questions and didn’t have sense enough to just open the darn thing. Teary eyed and alone, I am so scared of what I was fixing to read. Opening the mail, I slowly began to read – In response to your email; we have found a Tammy Jo Sauro in Pinson, Alabama and her phone number. There was no finding for a Candace Allison Berger in Westwego, La. Please let us know if we could be of more help to you. God Bless You and hopefully this is the person(s) you are looking for. NOLA Response Team. Well you could have lifted me off of chair with a feather, I felt somewhat relieved and yet I still wasn’t sure if it was she. This is the name I remembered from 1980, the last we heard from her was when Daddy passed away. Is this who I am searching for? Dialing the number that was given to me, my hands shook so I felt I would fall out in the floor. The phone rang; I waited in anticipation until an answer. “Hello” she answered in a soft voice. “Is this Tammy Sauro?” I ask her in a panicky, shaky tone. Her answer was yes so I began asking this one question twice, “What is your dad’s name?” She hesitated for a moment and told me our daddy’s name; yet explaining he had passed away in 1980 my heart sank and I felt such a relief. I knew, I just knew then it was she. As she began to sob, she asks, “Oh no, who is this?” “Tammy, this is Tip, your sister”. Then there was silence and the tears fell as she asks in a tearful, muffled sound, “are you for real?” “Yes” I replied and “this is not a joke.” As I explained to her about our looking for them and we were worried so, I could hardly speak. Here is one of the sisters I had tried so very hard to find! Just wondering if they were okay and how had they been doing for so long. After crying for about fifteen minutes we finally talked and boy did we! With the both of us now crying and proclaiming our love for each other and for our siblings, we began a long pleasant conversation about our lives and families and such. I knew it was going to be fine after that! They were safe from the wraths of Hurricane Katrina! “God, thank you for your precious love. Amen”. Oh how lucky we were to find them and know they are safe. I am sure a lot of happy endings have occurred out of this historical event of a hurricane such as this devastating one – yet there are those out there who lost loved ones. My heart goes out to each and every one of those people who fell victim to “Katrina”. With God’s abiding love, I hope He will fill your heart with the joy and understanding one day you will see that special loved one. Everything happens for a reason – something’s we do not no the reason for and do question why, but it is my belief that all things are possible with prayer. I pray for each and every one of the victims of Hurricane Katrina. God be with you.
After talking on the phone and announcing to everyone our sisters were okay and
we were planning a visit from Tammy Jo; we waited in anticipation for the day of September 13, 2005. It was Friday morning and I received a call from her telling me she and her husband, Frank was in High Point. Oh the excitement! She was getting so close and I thought I would pass completely out if she didn’t get here soon. She’s made it, my beautiful sister the one I had searched for and longed to see. Throughout the short time we had we accomplished a lot of reminiscing about our lives and proclaimed the love we have for each other.
We live in North Carolina and she and her family in Alabama leaves a lot of miles between us, we have managed to see each other as much as possible.

Tammy after 25 years

Today is Thursday, August 7th, 2008,Tammy is in Alabama and I am sitting here in North Carolina and am waiting in anticipation for her to come back for a visit. Was hoping to see her this summer but maybe soon. I miss her so much ... I wonder if she knows how my heart breaks every time she pulls out of the driveway and not looking back? Three days is so short of time to spend and it flies by so quickly. We spent some sister time together, our usual trip to the local Dollar Tree store and out to eat later in the evening, then everyone is too tired and full to sit and talk awhile. There’s so little time between visits yet we do make the best of it.

This candle burns in Mamas' memory and the many others who have been stricken with the likes of this devastating disease.

Alzheimers is a dreadful disease, effecting the elderly. It strips them of all memory of their lives and everyone in their lives. Let's all hope and pray for a cure from this dreadful disease.

Picture of Mama and myself in December 1999 after her having had a massive stroke in October of that same year. This is at the Rehabilitation Center of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Our hearts broke as she had to be placed there from complications after an amputation of a toe due to Vascular Disease. We hoped and prayed she was being cared for, yet we saw a few slight infragments of the caregivers and we really didn't see the same ones alot! Even the management switched leaders way too much in
the thirteen months Mama was there. She had a short stay compared to others and Thank you God for that! Tried to ease my mind of having to put Mama in that resthome and it liked to have killed us - I regret so many times when visiting and knowing she didn't understand what was going on and wondering why we were leaving her. The doctors said it was best for her and her healing from her surgery. There are a lot of things that happened and I won't write about them here - all I ask if you are faced with such as this to leave your loved one in a home - stay on them, watch every move of you can - you will regret it in the long run. I am 61 years old and as of today Mama has been gone 8 years and 6 months and I still hurt for her. My heart aches for my best friend everyday, my life has never been the same since she passed away. I will never want her back the way she left here -

Please Don’t Hurt Our Mom

She’s entering her home away from home
Forgotten all and where she comes from
Please treat her well be patient and kind
She has no memories left in her mind
Of where she is or who we are
She’s a special lady to us by far
Raised five children struggling through life
Even forgot she was once a wife
A little stubborn and set in her ways
With talks of childhood; her younger days
A beloved mother to us she’s a saint
Tried hard to keep her but now we can’t
Needing constant round-the-clock care
Please take care of her always be there
Going to be times she’ll give you a fit
Just give us a call; we’ll take care of it
Many of our elderly get hurt everyday
Be gentle and kind - treat her good we pray
No matter the time be it day or night

Let us know if she gets out of sight

As it took my mom and her life is missed

Not even her children she could name
At seventy-eight this disease begun

PINK MANDEVILLA

My stepson gave me this plant and it is a beauty! After searching for tips on caring for this plant - and there is plenty, I was amazed at all the beautiful pictures of a Mandevilla.

'ALICE DU PONT' (Mandevilla)
• Evergreen
• Zones 21-25; may grow as a root-hardy perennial in zone 26, 27
• Full sun or partial shade
• Regular watering
• Climbs by: twining

If it were grown exclusively outdoors, this lovely vine would be found in only the mildest zones. But because it thrives in pots on porch or deck, it's one of the most widely sold vines in the country. Pure pink, 2- to 4-inch-wide flowers shaped like flaring trumpets usually bloom from spring into fall, carried against a backdrop of glossy green, 3- to 8-inch leaves. And unlike many other vines, this one blooms happily at a small size — plants in 4-inch containers regularly produce flowers.
You'll often find this plant identified simply by its cultivar name — 'Alice du Pont' — rather than by genus and cultivar (Mandevilla 'Alice du Pont').
This vine does best with rich soil. It likes sun but needs some afternoon shade in the hottest areas. Grown outdoors in its preferred warm climates, it can reach 20 to 30 feet; container-grown plants stay much lower. For in-ground as well as containerized plants, provide a trellis or similar support. Feed container plants with a complete fertilizer every 2 weeks until the end of bloom; then trim the stems back by half and bring the plant indoors or to a sheltered spot. Water regularly throughout winter. If you're growing the plant outdoors, do any necessary pruning during the growing season.

7/27/08 Smoke - Free One Year !!!!!

One year ago today (started CHANTIX on 7/13/08, my grandson,

Hunters' 9th birthday) I gave up the worst habit in my life ...

I quit smoking! Forty years of damaging my body and

chancing getting lung cancer. God was with me!

So far - the two tests I have had, everything is fine.

This medication should be applauded - I was one of the lucky ones to not have any side effects as some people have reported. Now mind
you I really had gotten very sick for a few days but it passed. Thank
God I didn't give up! I made it and proud to say "I DO NOT SMOKE!"

Super Woman - I'm not! But man I feel better than I have in a long time.

My breathing is amazing compared to a year ago.

Used to I couldn't complete a sentence

without having to stop in the middle of it to catch my breathe!

Here is a poem I wrote while taking CHANTIX -

Second Wind …

Morning is come so soon you know
It’s choking time here I go!
Coughing and sneezing it’s always the same
I don’t want to keep playing this game
Need to breathe clean, fresh air
A bountiful freshness everywhere
So I went to the doctor to get a fix
He wrote me a prescription for Chantix
First four days it was one pill for me
I smoked two and a half packs, you see
Fourth day started a pill morning and night
Cigarettes slowly faded out of sight –
On my second week can’t smoke anymore
Amazing I’m feeling better than before!
So I’ll sit back now no need for critics
Getting my second wind with Chantix.

I won't knock anyone for smoking - I know at one time I didn't want to hear it.

Today I am Smoke - Free & breathing! My family is happy for me and that

means all the world to me ...

Please let me know if you or anyone you know

has taken or tried CHANTIX. I am curious to know

if anyone else had the luck I had with this medicine.

I have heard a lot of bad things and am wondering if

anyone else has quit with CHANTIX -

In The Pink - Another Girl

GIRLS - GIRLS IN THE PINK ...

Yesterday, June 26th 2008 I found from ultrasound and pictures there is another little girl to grace this family. Kodie Layne is scheduled for her new place on earth November 17th. She is the daughter of my youngest son and his wife and has a big sister, Kiara who is 6 years old and starts school this fall. It was delightful and exciting watching her face as she saw the 3D face of her little sister, Kodie.

After a couple of miscarriages, we are now awaiting the birth of Kensley Faith,
the daughter of my middle son and his wife in the next few days.
She is due on July 8th, yet I am looking for a little firecracker! Her mom is ready I am sure of that. Kensley has an older brother, Ian who is 18 years old and a big sister, Haley who will be 9 years this September.

Tomorrow, June 14th, my grandson, Ian graduates from Graham High School! As he takes that walk across the stage for his diploma, I wish him all the best that he can get out of life. He plans to go to ACC and further his education in Criminal Justice - my little "PeeWee" wants to be a policeman. I am so very proud of him no matter what he does and I know he will do it well.

Remembering

Seemed like only yesterday
Remembering the past
Her little girl stood beside her
Yet wasn’t meant to last
Attached like glue,
An inseparable pair
This little girl and she
With the velvet touch of her hand
She slipped away, you see.
Reaching out for the pretty bow
Flowers circled on a boutonnière
With an angel pin of gold
Ribbons of satin she did adhere.
Streaming across her shaky hand
High school colors red and black
Her eyes swelling from the tears
She starts thinking back –
This is prom night, a year ago
Her daughter dressed beautifully
Photos in a scrapbook
Reminders to her you see
Blinding headlights –
Rain slowly falling
A curve in sight ahead
Her boyfriend remembered nothing
Just screaming in his head.
Her only child swept away
By the brutal hands of death

Tears in her eyes, her sorrow is deep

Homeless…

Alone without a coat to wear
to shelter him from the cold
He has no home to call his own
he’s ragged and getting old;
No place to live or wait for a meal
on the dinner table again
He suffers with hunger, no money for food
or a meal to stop the pain
He never knows where to spend the night
his shelter is a cardboard box
Without a blanket or a pillow for comfort
can’t even stay in a cellblock.
He never bothers anyone just walks around all day
wandering about without a doubt
he is societies castaway…
Maybe he is a veteran, who fought for us in war
or someone who was pushed aside
for another to adore
These homeless people in this world
aren’t they still the children of God?
Nobody knows his or her hardships
or where their steps have trod
It is sad to see them without a coat
or shoes upon their feet
Wondering where they will spend the night
to make their day complete…
Turning your head in disbelief
in your mind the memory clings,
Be thankful for your treasures
your home and finest things;
For something bad could happen
and there you could be found
Homeless, helpless and hungry,
broke and sorrow bound…

Meet my mom, one of the sweetest women in the world. She was the most dedicated Mother any child would have loved to had. I embrace thoughts of her lovingly in my mind and put them on paper. This is my way of commuting with her, as she is in Heaven celebrating the life she had forgotten.

Even at my age now 60 years old, I miss my mother. She was my best friend, at one time we were neighbors. I moved away from across the street from her and not long after that move, she suddenly became my daughter. I was now

"Trading Places, Raising Mom".

This book is dedicated to all who are and were caregivers to their aging parents or spouses. To who ever learned the true meaning of Alzheimer’s and yet still had to wonder why. To the families who knew the meaning of remembrance.
During the time Mom spent with me, I indeed had to learn patience and kindness, because when all is said and done, without these two things in life - you will
never find peace -

Meeting as strangers, they fell in love
A love so new from God above
Making their vows for a lifetime to share

Frowns took over their loving lifestyle
They gave up the fight and went on their way
Hoping to see a brighter day
Smiles soon faded, yet we find
A lifetime forever was all in their mind
Now through pictures, we remember their years
Smiles soon faded have turned to tears.

The Missing Spoke; Our Dad

Unlike wagon wheels families formed in a circle
Staying together only took a miracle
Growing up, as Dad was never home

Leaving Mama with five children to raise all alone
Never knowing this man, he rarely came around
So in our minds confusion was found
Back in our lives when I turned twenty-eight
Wanting and needing him was quite a debate
Later leaving again, life still went on
Gone from our lives leaving us all alone
After awhile he finally called our mom
With bad news to tell, for us she tried to stay calm
Cancer had brought him down to his knees
He begged for forgiveness, he begged us please!
In nineteen-eighty, Dad passed away
Our hearts we broken, we cried in dismay
He was never here for us we loved him and yet
Dad we forgive you, we will never forget.
You left us so small, never looking back
It’s taken so long to get our lives on track
You came to be with us for your final days
We all said “Goodbye, we’ll love you always”
We miss you Dad each and everyday
Sometimes we feel you’re still far away
Still away like you were all our lives
Deep in our hearts, your memory survives.

Excerpts from my book - Trading Places, Raising Mom:

We knew something was wrong:
Things surely were getting worse; mama will not leave her heating stove alone! She heated with gas a lot like every household, so anyone who has a gas heater knows the heater would be cool to the touch when the fan was circulating the warm air and would be hot if unplugged to keep the fan from running. Mama used to know how the system worked but now she was unplugging the heater making it get so hot her smoke detector would go off. Calling in the middle of the night to tell me something went wrong with the heater, the detector blasting in the background – why, right now I get chills thinking about it! It was devastating to hear mamas voice on the other line screaming her house was on fire! I believed it, frantically getting dressed, jumping in the car, and riding a few blocks away to her house just not knowing what you were going to find is horrifying! -Buy the Book

Thanksgiving – 1996:
Heartbreaking as ever, I picked mama up on Wednesday after work, I had a long weekend to spend with mama and my family. It was traditional for us to have Thanksgiving dinner together, yet this year was extremely different, so very hard to know something inside mamas body was taking a toll on her making her act so strange. What could it be? What had a hold of her that she could not even speak properly or much less do anything? At dinner she was so very quiet, this was not like mama, she was the center of this family carrying on a conversation was never hard for her. Now she could hardly respond to a simple question, as “how are you”? What in the world was going on? Hardly a whisper came out of her mouth whenever she spoke; it was as if someone else was inside answering for her. This typical question made her have to stop and think of what was said? Even her appetite slowed down, mama was always a good eater when it came to the holidays! This was always a joking thing from family members because our mama was so tiny, a small framed woman yet she could eat very well on those special occasions! We had taken a lot of pictures of her eating and of her plate throughout the years, just for fun. Now all that is left are our memories, what we remember, not her. -Buy the Book

The Saddest Christmas:

On Christmas day, we gathered at my sister Elaine’s as we did every year, but now, mama didn’t want to go! She faked a little cough and said she didn’t feel like going anywhere. This wasn’t mama! She always wanted us together for all holidays. Why is this happening? Being the ‘rock’ of this family, she slowly turned into a little bag of pebbles; Alzheimer’s had broken her down so. She loved Christmas; she loved a lot of things this disease had taken away! But why! How could this happen to her, how could it really happen to anyone? We were not prepared for this; we didn’t know what to do! Sadly we went on with dinner, just trying to be a family even though our minds were on mama.You know, I think as I am writing, mama may have been getting us ready for these last few holidays we had with her. These last couple of years was surely going to be different and difficult. As the changes were meant to be … -Buy the Book

Reality Sets In:
February 17, 1997, I took mama to the Family Practice Center in Chapel Hill to be tested for Alzheimer’s. Mama was being recorded on camera while in the room, she did not want to take off her clothes to be examined nor did she corporate with the doctor just to listen to her heartbeat. After the physical examine there were more tests, while going from room to room she was always on camera. Later Dr. Fisher left to check the test, as we remained being recorded. Mama was so scared; she did not know what was going on, she kept asking me what the reason was for all this, trying to explain the best way I knew how to let her know she was sick. With a big smile on her face, she sit back and said to me proudly; “I’m not sick, I feel fine, you are the one sick!” This was so cute, she could make you laugh sometimes at the funny things she would say and especially the way she said them. Pacing back and forth she kept wringing her hands in front of her as we waited for the doctor to come back with the results. She kept saying to me in a frustrated voice, “let’s get out of here, they aren’t coming back.” She was so very jittery and upset about being there, she was ready to go!
Doctor Stephen Fisher was her physician; I could tell by the look on his face, when he walked in the room he dreaded to tell me the words I didn’t want to hear. No, please, my heart sank as he began to tell me those dreadful words, “Sylvia, your Mother has Alzheimer’s.” I could hardly respond as I took her frail little hand in mine and held it so tight until it had started turning blue. Crying, I hugged her, I paced the floor feeling as if my world had fell apart. Oh my God, what will we do! She seemed so strong never sick, always there for us, this is our Mama! I knew yet I didn’t want to believe the words he had just said to me. God doesn’t put on us no more than we can handle – I knew if I believed God would hear me, He would give me the strength to care for mama.She watched me as I cried to the doctor asking how could we cope, what were the steps to take to make sure mama would be okay. He answered as honestly as he could, “Just treat her as if she were daughter.” All the while mama sit, smiling at him and saying; “this is my cousin, Dorothy!” -Buy the Book

80 th, A Milestone:
A Sunday surprise birthday party – what a surprise! Mama was now semi-coma and on oxygen. Her nurse had called on Saturday the day before the party to inform us mama wasn’t doing well. We started to call the party off yet she wanted us to go on with it. Saddest part of this day mama didn’t know what was going on. Mama always liked her birthdays and the parties and people paying so much attention to her. This was her day, her time to shine and age another year. Yet this was her final year on earth.
We went on and had her party with her family and her best friend, Velna. It turned out nice but such a sad one. Mama lay there and never responded to anything, not a touch, a voice whisper in her ear or a kiss on her forehead. We all took pictures of this final birthday with each family member and their families, her sister Irene, her sister-in-law, Mary and all who were there.
A milestone in life, your 80th, such a long time to be here on this earth, God’s creation with so many people to love you and be loved back! She was a special lady, a lady loved by all. Throughout my whole life I have never known anyone to say a bad thing about my mama. There were always good things people said and so many just admired her. I thank God for this wonderful human being, I thank my daddy for this wonderful woman he married and had us five. Without the two I would never know her. I feel I am the luckiest person in the world to have had such a beautiful mama! Yes, that’s what we all called her ‘Mama’. Losing Mama:
My brother and sisters were called after midnight on Valentine’s Day to come to the rest home. Our mama had passed away at 12:47 a.m. Walking in the door of our mama’s room, all was quiet and she was still in the same position we had left her in earlier that day of her party. When I saw Mama’s face, I knew immediately that her spirit had left her body. My heart fell past my feet; I instantly relived the feelings I had in 1980 when I saw my daddy laying dead in the hospital bed at Skilled Nursing.
People had been telling me how much they admired me for caring for my mama, I was not forced into it and it was what I felt I needed to do. My mama raised four siblings and myself to do the right thing. I could have walked away anytime, but instead I chose to care for my mama. I did not quit!
Now the reality of this day has set in, I saw mama’s lifeless body lying in the hospital bed in her room. The pain inside me was literally overwhelming, I was not sure I could withstand the grief. I felt I might faint or scream from the incredible sadness and loss. I did not feel the “release” as others had predicted, I felt abandoned in this world and completely alone, as if I were a ghost. All I could say to Mama was “I love you.” I kissed mama’s forehead before we were sent into another room waiting as the funeral home people took her body away. It was as if they carried my own life out that door! I felt empty inside; I dreaded the next few days for what laid ahead for my siblings and me. -Buy the Book

I Choose To Remember

Gone are the smiles, I remember as a child
The glowing eyes so meek and mild

She's in Heaven now, as Alzheimer's befell
This disease took her mind and swept it away
Made her act as if a child at play
I choose to remember this lady so bright
When angels came to take her that night
When seeing her after she took her last breath

That made her forget she once was a wife
Loving her children and her family
She never knew them then you see

She's watching from above, as her head will bow

Ruby's Butterflies

Such a beautiful day! Finally I think we are over the frosty weather - gosh I hope. Now we carry on with planting our gardens and fixing the flower beds to watch their growth throughout the long hot summer. What is so sad, we are going to be wishing for a cold spell soon. Hehehe - we just can't make up our minds. Anyway have a good and properous weekend and do well in anything you partake your few days off.

Ruby beads with silver spacings - I added a cluster of butterflies tucked between silver beads and noodle spacers. And finished it off with a silver heart toggle clasp.

Oh What A Day!

Today the weather is taking a turn for the worst yet again! It is amazing how it can change so in a few days. Friday we were in short sleeves and shorts, coming out with the sandals and now there is a frost warning in the a.m. on Monday morning. It is so darn confusing when it comes to deciding what to wear the next day, (I prefer to stay in my pj's). I guess so many people are tuning more to the weather channel on television than they are to a movie - anyway hope your day is good and keep warm!

I would like to introduce you to Ricky, my son, he is the singer in the band from Burlington, North Carolina. Along with Scott and Dan they entertain all who love rock music with their own style of music. Good Morning All ...

Spring is trying so hard to make it's presence known here. Birds are singing, the squirrels are scurring about searching for food. My houseplants are so ready to get outside and breathe some fresh air. Above is another picture of my Christmas cactus which is so confused about when to bloom. As I stated in an original blog, I have one bloom here in the spring! I think this poor thing is somewhat like this poor 'ole Granny, hehehe! Have a great day and I am still waiting for a comment or two.

Kenzie, my sleeping little angel - I look forward everyday to see her and spend time with her. At my age, I want so much to be able to spend time with my babies. My mom developed Alzheimers (click on word to read) and never got to spend the time with her new babies as they came along, I feel blessed that I am able and sane enough to have sleep-overs with them, we go to the park (weather permitting), why I had about five of them in one day at the park! After that day, a much needed break was taken!

Anyway, this is Kenzie, she is my first great-grandchild and her mommy is my first grandchild. She is seven months old as of April 1st and getting rowdier everyday. I guess you would say - she is waking up now! Just wanted to show you all my sleeping angel ...

One Bloom of Life ...

Rainy, rainy Saturday - drops of rain falling slowly for awhile, just enough to make you drowsy - ready for a nap and comes a downpour. Yards are standing with water
the first blooms of spring are getting their roots filled of Gods' soaking rains nourishing them before the sun and heat take over enough to make them all sad and shriveled. Here is my Christmas cactus, it was full bloomed during the Christmas holidays and I moved it into the bathroom where the skylight is and now there is one bloom! Amazing what the sun and light can do to a plant along with food and water. Last year this plant bloomed on one side throughout Christmas and the other side bloomed in the summer, so I am not sure what to call it. It was my moms' so I cherish it whatever blooms it graces; it's a reminder of Mama tending to it.

It took everything I had not to fall apart, she needed me then; as I did while growing up. My mom raised the five of us alone and now it was my turn to take care of my little girl...

Email update - Saturday night from Vanessa:

We are suppose to be picked up in the morning at 8:00. We just got home from Wendy and Reagan's house. She called me and said, "Come on over we have homemade soup", "Are you coming?", "Come on Gee!" How in the world can you say no to that????? So we went. She is so amazing. As we were leaving she said, "Gee, I love you and I will see you in the morning, ok" Of course I said, "I love you too and I will see you early in the morning!"
Carla said she would email you some pictures. I know she will. Carla, Debbie & Sam (my sister and her husband) is coming over to see us off. They will probably follow us to the airport.

Guess you could tell by now .

The two we have are Mother and daughter

are so jealous of each other. We have to scold

and punish these two constantly, yet we

wouldn't take nothing for them.

When we got Sapphire in 2004 she was very timid and scared of everyone.

We found out later she was severly abused by her previous owner. There are

plenty of ways you can punish a dog without having to beat them. How cruel,

how can anyone do that to a helpless animal, one of Gods' creations He put here

on this earth for us to love.

Our little Sapphire gave birth to six puppies
on November 28th 2006 –
They are now six and a half weeks
Doctor says they are very healthy

and ready to explore the world!

The adoption took place after their visit for shots and checkup - everything was set. It was so very hard to let them leave. These little beauties were time consuming yet we loved every minute of caring for them. The first three starting from bottom to the top is "Little Man", my niece took him, sad to say he was stolen from her last year. We had a flyer mad but no one ever came forward about him. The next baby (asleep) is as we called her, Miss Durham, we heard from them twice in a year. The next is "Sassy", she was adopted by my son and his family. Sassy comes often to play with Noel and she is tiny! The next three, the tiny one on the bottom is ours, Noel - The one over top of her is "Sammy" - he lives close by. Last one is my sister-in-law's, "Blondie", he is a rascal with the biggest blue eyes! He lives close by also! I feel bad about "Little Man", but someone must have wanted him more than us - so I hope he is taken care of. We miss you "Little Man."

Abandoned on the side of the road on a cold, rainy night in October of 2003, my granddaughter found two puppies lying helplessly for a rescue. And of course she brings one to me after giving him the name "Oreo". Six inches long, weighing less than a pound, he made a big impact on me. This cute fuzzy thing took over myheart quickly as I said "Yes". His name was changed to "Rusty" (as I am a Rusty Wallace fan). For the first few years after noticing his feet were getting bigger than his body almost, not knowing his breed, he stayed inside. The saddest part is he still likes it inside, he is weaning his way out on the porch now so that's good. Rusty gets along well with his two sisters and the three of them have been taken care of as to ever bringing in other pets here. We are fine as it is ...

So rest in this – our mother has left our presence, she now resides in Gods– And her life is in Christ, in His hands and under His wings. Find comfort in knowing that where God is, she is also!

How I wish I could block out memories of the past three years. Except for those precious, unbelievable moments, mama and I had together, spending times picnicking in the yard. All of us gathering for holidays and birthdays, always on Sundays at mamas under her big shade tree.

Being Mama's caregiver for three years compelled me to write my feelings of frustration, sadness and disbelief at what Alzheimer's does to its' victim. I found relief that all is well now since Mama gave up her fight of this terrible disease February 14, 2000. Heaven's angel still is inspiring me even though she's gone, I look for signs of her everyday, some sort of sign as she lets me know all is well and she is happy and has control of her life now. My signs from Mama are in poetry form; the words I write give me the relief as I think of her often. She’s given me this way of communication with her and I’ll except that if this is my way of knowing she is okay. My words are sad, silly and comforting to others who read my poems especially my family and friends.

Alzheimer’s Bracelet

On my left wrist bears a bracelet

To help me think, pray and cope

Of the day I lost my mother

With Alzheimer’s there’s no hope

She was stripped of all her memory

Of a family she loved so

All her friends and loved ones

Didn’t want to see her go

God had a special reason

To end her suffering and pain

Heaven’s gates flew wide open

Such an angel did He gain

Lots of her many loved ones

Waiting with opened arms

She now has her memory

And all her loving charms

For a cure from this disease

This is Reagan, my first cousins' granddaughter, it breaks my heart to see her going through this turmoil in her life. But you know she seems to be a trooper and taking it all in stride! She seems happy and full of energy. Am positive she has her days. But the cutest little energetic girl, Reagan, I admire you so very much for your courage and bravery as you take this journey through your young life and I hope for much speed on your recovery. Up until last summer, Reagan Allison was a healthy little girl.
Then in June, the two-year old started having high fevers. Her mother, Wendy Allison, took her to the hospital, where she remained hospitalized for four days. Doctors told her then that the girl had a viral infection. She returned home, but she was not the active little girl she used to be. Reagan's grandmother, Vanessa Allison, who kept her that summer as she always did, said her granddaughter never fully recovered from the infection. "All summer, it was on and off like that," she recalled.
Then in August, Reagan fell ill again. This time, she not only presented high fever. She also was coughing and had bruises all over her body. Doctors told Reagan's mother that it was yet another viral infection and gave the girl another round of antibiotics. On Aug, 20, mother and grandmother took Reagan to the emergency room at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro. At first, they received the same diagnosis. Suspicious that something else was affecting the girl, they asked for blood work. "We were just really persistent," Allison said.
The results, she said, came back in panic, meaning that something was wrong. They immediately took Reagan to the UNC Hospitals at Chapel Hill, where she was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Lukemia. Though the diagnosis caught Allison and her daughter by surprise, she said the nurses and doctors were very kind in explaining to them that treatment and had a high success rate. "I think the Lord was right with us," Allison said. "I think we handled it very well."
A month after Reagan's diagnosis, Allison quit her job as a teacher's assistant at E.M. Holt Elementary School to take care of her. Though it meant losing her income, Allison said it was the best think for her granddaughter, considering that her daughter is a single mother. "She couldn't go back to daycare," Allison said. "We just felt it best that I keep her so that she wouldn't be exposed to so many germs." Though, financially, things have gotten tough, Allison and her family have found people willing to help them along the way. Allison's church, First Baptist Church of Gibsonville, for instance, helped her and her husband pay the bills during the past three months when her husband could not work due to illness.
"It is so heart-warming how everybody just comes together when someone is in need," she said, adding that even strangers have lent her daughter a helping hand. "The Lord is with us and he said that he will provide and he does," Allison said. In an effort to help Reagan, who turned three in December, E.M. Holt kicked off a campaign, Pennies for Patients, Friday. Students have two weeks to raise as much money as they can. The class that raises the largest amount will get a pizza party, Allison said. All the money collected will be given to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, an organization that helps leukemia patients across the country. "It was just an honor for them to do this in Reagan's honor," Allison said. She said that for the past month, Reagan has been able to act like a 3-year-old once again. "She is the smartest 3-year-old I've ever seen," she said, adding that she is braver and stronger than most of the adults around her. She said Reagan "is doing very well right now," adding that doctors found a little bit of fluids in her left lung this week and are treating her with antibiotics. She is due back at the doctor next week. Allison said Reagan has been asked to be a poster child for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, which means she would visit area schools like E.M. Holt and other groups that participate in the society's programs.

The day before Easter, sun is shining so pretty and warm, 70's today. Tomorrow Easter Sunday it is forcasted to be in the 50's. My how the temps change from day to day. Anyway, want to wish everyone a Happy Easter & hope you find that "Golden Egg".

I would like for you to meet my family, 3 sons, stepson and seven (eight in July) grandchildren. We are a close family - kids stay with Mawmaw & Pawpaw alot on weekends - their little sleepovers. It is fun and I want to keep them as much as I can since I am 60 and may not be able to before long. God bless my family, I love them oh so much!

Ladybugs Fashion

Spring has arrived as of yesterday and this morning there's a chill in the air. Oh to feel the warmth of the sun on your skin as you walk throughout the yard checking the blooms of the new bulbs you planted in the fall or the one that are renewing their lives from the year before. However the sights of the tiny creatures and blooming flowers is a beautiful sight.

From Burlington, North Carolina, I am a mother of three sons, one stepson, seven grandchildren and one great-grnddaughter. Also am waiting the arrival of a new granddaughter on July 8th of this year. And yet anotherbaby in November, 2008. Whew! A big family, huh?

MY FAMILY:

Writing is a hobby I started in 1996, as I was care giving my mother who had Alzheimer’s before her death, February14,2000. After her death I was compelled to write a book about our ventures of Alzheimer’s, Trading Places, Raising Mom. Writing feelings from the heart as I watched Alzheimer's wisk her mind away as if she never existed. A strong loving woman who raised us five kids alone after my dad left when I was five years old. Never complained to anyone about her problems, she worked and loved us equally. A woman who was a private person and God forbid how this disease made her into a child again not knowing all the shocking things she did daily. No one knows till they have experienced. Alzheimer's is so cruel, it is heartbreaking watching what it does to it's victims. This is a time in my life I wished I could forget or will I?
Some of my poems have been published in magazines and anthologies. Have written several stories for a local book ‘Hometown Memories’ of days gone by, writing about my memories of my childhood here in Burlington, North Carolina. Received several awards for my poetry for ‘Outstanding Writer’ in 1998, 2000, 2006 and 2007. Sharing my poetry online at my website - http://www.beadinggranny.com/

God is watching everything
No matter what you do
It's always your choice
Where you hear the word
Just as long as you're satisfied
In believing what you've heard
It's your choice where to worship
Have fellowship and pray
As long as you believe in Him
He'll be there anyway
You're going to feel so different
So fresh so brand new
Knowing the choice you made
Will be completely up to you
So listen to your heart
Heed the Masters voice

A million tears I’ve cried for you
Hoping things would change

As things were so darn strange
People ask questions so many times
A million times and two
Tears that I shed were all so real
What was I supposed to do?
Take back my heart
Laugh in your face?
I tried so hard it’s true
Now I’m crying a million tears
It’s all because of you.
There are millions of chances to make a life

Too many fishes in the sea

I love writing poetry, it is what I feel or have experienced. Sometimes people ask me to write a poem for a birthday or a death, I manage and alot of folks are quite surprised. I enjoy what I do, writing is my passion - but now comes my jewelry. Oh what to do! It is funny. I start off with my jewelry, laying it out bead by bead, colors, size oh it is a beautiful sight! Here is one of my favorites...

But then there are words floating in my mind that I need to put on paper, off I go to the computer. Sometimes I am torn between writing and making jewelry so I have to divide myself between the two; treat them like I do my grandchildren (hehehe) spreading that love around. Then I manage everything I set out to do for the day.
